What Is The Whatever About?
“If I were to put the mission statement of The Whatever in two words, it would simply be…“to care”. The organization is extremely intentional when planning events and activities. They work extremely hard to exude a spirit of care for their fellow students. I am very proud of them and grateful for the impact they are having in our midst.”
- Ryan Richardson, Director of Baylor Chapel Programs
We are the weird. The adventurous. The loving and encouraging. We want to change the student culture at Baylor forever.
In January of 2015, Junior Nathan Elequin sat down with Freshmen Annie Mathis and Justin Potter to ask a simple question: "What if we formed a group of the people that like to do whatever, and had lots of adventures together?"
Over time, many students joined The Whatever as it grew in size and touched many parts of Baylor and surrounding Waco.
The Whatever soon formed, starting as a small hangout for students and growing into a task force of creative (and crazy) ideas. Events such as a Tortilla-Tossing Olympics, Heroes vs. Villains Epic Rap Battle, and Lip-Sync Apocalypse began shaping the group into a place of fun and unorthodox adventures.
We are a home for anybody. No matter what background, major, or personality, you will find a place here.
With its unique model of invitation and fun activities, The Whatever quickly learned that it could provide a place of safety and acceptance to all Baylor students.
Leaders began working to shape the group's efforts around reaching out to other students, giving encouragement, and creating excuses for students to 'step outside their comfort zone' and develop their own confidence.
Life can be an adventure - and every day can be a new quest.
College is NOT meant to be something you "survive" - it's a climb with new adventures every day. To give students power over their development, our leaders have engineered "The Whatever Quest."
Members begin a journey like in a game, starting at Level 1 and earning experience for the fun things they explore in college. Academics, Athletics, and Social quests make up this quest to the top - making all of college fun.
Members are also placed in Guilds, giving them teammates on this journey - and some friendly competition. In the end, the goal is to reinvent the day-to-day experience so that students have something to fight for.
